ABOUT THE GIFT OF GIVING PROJECT - Timeline
Thank you for supporting this Gift of Giving Projects mission. It’s been a long journey
and finally we are here. The books are readily available in Kampala, Uganda.
It’s time now to prepare to distribute the books, organize and implement the reading
comprehension programs and the teachers training workshops. At whatever stage in
the mission, your on-the-ground participation will certainly be of value.
Here is a breakdown of a tentative schedule designed around my arrival and extended
stay in Uganda. I leave Los Angeles for Uganda the 2nd week of May 2016.
Volunteers may visit schools and/or participate as a teacher’s aide at whatever stage of
their visit. I can arrange activities with participating schools to work with volunteers on
arts & crafts projects or read a book class, etc. Let me know your interest so that I can
pre-plan and also make suggestions on how best to prepare.
I am also working with 2 orphanages that would love to have you interact with the children. One orphanage bases its mission on teaching their kids the art of music, performing arts, and developing their creative side. The other orphanage rescues children abandoned by their mothers in a slum area and also offers them free education.
2016 MISSION TRIP TIMELINE
Stage 1:
End of May to June
-
Sorting of the books by age group and school selections.
-
Stamping each book in 3 different places with “Not For Sale” stamps.
-
Re-visiting the 8 schools and 2 orphanages already on the list.
-
Meetings with the Uganda Teachers Union and other involved organizations. Main objective of these meetings is to delegate tasks to volunteering members on the strategies of the programs and the workshops. Setting schedules and timelines.
Stage 2:
Mid June to July
-
Preparing and training head teachers, school administrators, and local volunteers on both the programs and the workshop.
-
Distribution of the books and program schedules.
-
Event on location with speeches about “the importance of reading” taking place at every location with students, teachers, parents, and some community members present. Certificates will be awarded here. And ideally we can gift attendees, school supplies, food, or something of value to their daily life. Local media coverage. Expect visiting public figures.
Stage 3:
Mid July to September
-
Printing and organizing all the project paperwork for distribution. Because alterations will be made on-the-ground, the printing will be done over there.
-
The Teachers Training Workshop is the next step. The local trained educators will manage the presentation to attendees. The workshop will be scheduled for a Saturday all day workshop. We will be feeding them and ideally distributing teaching tools, and some petty cash. This training workshop will be filmed and will be used to train many others.
-
Local volunteers and I will be attending the first day of each school that begins the implementation of the reading comprehension program. Visiting volunteers can attend this step.
Stage 4:
September to December
-
Visiting volunteers will have a unique opportunity to assist schools with their reading comprehension programs. This schedule is based on the school and can be arranged with you upon arrival.
-
Volunteers can participate in further workshops intended to train teachers and school administrators. Based on need and it may be out of the city.
-
Volunteers can tag along as we scout more qualifying schools by district with members of the Uganda Teachers Union.
-
We will distribute more books as time permits. This distribution will most likely be out of the city and to some public schools.
-
Volunteers assigned to specific schools will do accountability visits and data collection of reports. Visiting volunteers can tag along.
