Vaccines, Prevention & Insurance Protection
It's safe to say that you should have your annual check-up up to date before departure and be sure to take waterever precaution you feel most comfortable.
ABOUT VACCINES
Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip as it is suggested by the DCC. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and your yearly flu shot. It is not a requirement for visiting Uganda. Some vaccines are based on whether you are going to be around wildlife like I was. The vaccines are not necessary for regular national park visits or to visit the schools we are working with.
You will need to take prescription medicine before, during, and after your trip to help prevent malaria. Your doctor in the US can help you decide which medicine is right for you, and also talk to you about other steps you can take to prevent any issues.
- My personal choice: I didn't take any prescriptions on my last trip. I was taking some natural remedies that worked for me should there have been an opportunity to get sick. I was pretty careful at drinking bottled water, I also purchased bug repellents for my clothes and skin. I didn't always use it but I was careful in my surroundings. I also purchased a treated mosquito net.
TRAVEL HEALTH INSURANCE
The best and cheapest time to purchase travel insurance is when you buy your plane ticket. Every time I travel I’ve purchased the insurance. Thankfully I have never needed to use it, however, its a small cost to assure a clear mind.
The way most insurances work is that you first have to pay for any medical expenses or plane ticket difference. Upon returning back to America, you supply the insurance company with receipts/proof and they will reimburse you.
Save all receipts and/or letters obtained from any doctor visits or airline ticketing.
Be sure to ask all the questions you want. Read your insurance contract and take a copy with you.
You are always welcome to reach out to me should you want more in-depth details.
